And whilst this is certainly the case, warehouse distribution centres up and down the country have been working around the clock to ensure all presents are received in time for Christmas. In fact, we could possibly even give Santa and all his elves a run for their money at the moment!

You can’t fail to have noticed many retailers advertising information regarding their last order days to guarantee Christmas delivery – quite often accompanied by a pre-January sale. But have you considered what this looks like behind the scenes?

Retailers in all forms and of all products have been turning to fulfilment partners in their droves over the past few years in a bid to streamline operations, allowing them to focus on what they are good at – thus leaving the warehouse and distribution elements to the experts. Invariably, the lead up to Christmas is always our busiest time and this year has been no exception. It also seems to start earlier every year! Undoubtedly the pre-Christmas Black Friday sales have also played their part in this.

For us, this increased activity is particularly seen in our Bonded Warehouse where clients are able to store their alcoholic goods whilst suspending the duty owing on them. For the stock-piling involved to satisfy Christmas and New Year demand, this has hugely positive connotations for working capital and cash flow for clients.

Yet, it hasn’t just been the inevitable Christmas build up resulting in our increased activity this year. The continued popularity of Teesport (and our close proximity to it) has played its part. Many importers have been looking for warehousing close to the Port to house their goods prior to distribution. It also wouldn’t be accurate not to mention the dreaded ‘B’ word! Brexit and the endless false starts have made it very difficult for manufacturers to have any certainty – especially if reliant on component parts from the EU. As a result, many have been holding more stock to ensure their production runs will be unaffected in the immediate aftermath.

There’s no doubt 2019 has been a fantastic year for us but we are also not naïve to the fact that the competitive world of warehousing is ever-changing in line with consumer behaviour and tastes. We are determined to continue to be at the forefront of this. Here’s to an even more exciting 2020!
